WHY SO SENSITIVE? might ask The Joker.
Rebel Wilson the Aussie comedienne who’s been in some big movies lately did a speech at the BAFTA’s (the UK Oscars) and it was hilarious, the funniest part of the show.
I logged on to Twitter and unsurprisingly the BAFTAs and Rebel were trending. Ocassionally I get caught up in them. And lo and behold, there are hordes of people trying to fan the non-existent flames of a non-existent fire taking pop shots at Rebel for a couple of her jokes, one of which wasn’t racist, one of which wasn’t damning of transgender people, but they can’t help themselves online, to try and stir up some controversy where there isn’t any. Zero. None. NOTHING.
Jokes are jokes. They weren’t even edgy for BAFTA never mind a dirty back alley comedy stand:
“I have never been invited to the Oscars. Because as you know they are racists. But the BAFTAs have diverse members and thats what we all want to see in life isn’t it – diverse members.
“Sorry, Idriss Elba you’re making me a bit nervous. I’m just sociologically programmed to want chocolate on Valentine’s Day.”
And she had been “practicing her transgender face” so she had a shot at winning an award.
On display there was only sharp wit and a comedienne being a comedienne, being funny. Seems like you say anything and you get lynched, especially online. I know it’s nothing new but it’s irritating.
I’m waiting for the bar, from the, ‘a man walks into a bar…’ lineage of jokes to setup a twitter account and start claiming equal rights. Why can’t it be a piece of wood? Or plastic? Boo Hoo!

Quite a while back, I retweeted something I thought funny (can’t even remember now what it was) and got pounced upon by a bunch of fanatics. No one has a sense of humor anymore.

Yeah its sad isn’t it. People are becoming humourless. You could tweet about how you hate cats or something innocuous and you’ll have the Cat Defense League or something on your case, trying to shame you.

Yeah it certainly seems like it, especially among the under thirties. It’s like people are incapable of differentiating between humour and actual racism which is slightly scary in itself. Where does it leave free speech?
