Leonardo DiCaprio+Oscar

WHATEVER THE REASONS, Leonardo DiCaprio’s wait for a Best Actor Oscar is way past due. I’m a massive fan of his, so unusually I’m venturing into film blogging territory (escaping editing!).

He’s been making exceptional films for decades and is one of the select few to have made it from kid actor to successful adult thespian. Without doubt he is the greatest actor of his generation, and not only that, nobody else comes close to challenging him, a feat in itself. Some argue he over acts, which I don’t buy. He acts, pure and simple and largely eschews method acting which arguably isn’t even acting due to the severe nature of immersing oneself in a role, in character. Anyway. Even when the story fails to come together as in The Beach, The Man in the Iron Mask, or J. Edgar his acting is always on point. The only major black mark is Revolution Road, one of the worst, most boring films I’ve ever watched. Incredibly he’s ‘only’ been in 37 films. Here’s a list of his outstanding films in which he’s never been a bit part player, rarely ever overshadowed:

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

The Basketball Diaries (one of my personal all time favourites) (1995)

Rome + Juliet (1996)

Titanic (1997)

Gangs of New York (2002)

Catch Me If You Can (2002)

The Aviator (2004)

The Departed (2006)

Blood Diamond (2006)

Body of Lies (2008)

Shutter Island (2010)

Inception (2010)

Django Unchained (2012)

The Great Gatsby (2013)

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

The Revenant (funnily enough I haven’t seen it yet) (2015)

HOW’S THAT FOR ENTERTAINMENT?

    1. I feel Inception gets better with more views. And Shutter Island is Shutter Island!

I love both. Have seen each at least 4 times. REVENANT was superb too

  2. I enjoyed “The Revenant” but I didn’t really think the acting was anything overly special. That said, plenty of these ceremonies come and go and people miss out, and he has done far better work that perhaps deserved more recognition.

I find it very debatable whether the best actors and films are English language though in some respects…I have seen far more interesting French films in recent times, and with better stories, acting etc…they just don’t have the same exposure.

    1. I agree on that last point without a doubt.
You’re not the first to say Leo in The Revenant wasn’t anything major. Typical Oscars. they balls it up when they should give them, then they balls it up when they don’t.
For sheer successful body of work, DiCaprio is unrivalled in the last 25 years or so.

  4. The Revenant is awesome! DiCaprio, true to form, turns in an exceptional performance. You’ll love it.

  5. @LionAroundWriting: I can’t remember if I ever finished watching Revolutionary Road. I know I didn’t finish the novel (yet.) However, that’s not to discount Richard Yates’ writing. I actually enjoy his flow and I think if anyone could write about and make cardboard interesting, it would be Yates (of course that stands to be argued.)

    1. And yes, it is great to see DiCaprio finally receive recognition for his work; better late than never!

I recommend that you see The Revenant in the theater. The cinematography and score is best experienced in the theater–unless you have your own theater..in your castle 😉

      1. Haha, the er theatre room is being renovated…
Yeah I missed seeing it recently, but I’m gonna wait for an opportunity to see it in a cinema to appreciate it fully.
